Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential for ensuring your tattoo heals well. Poor aftercare can affect the quality of your tattoo, leading to fading, infection, or improper healing.

Healing Guide

  • Leaving the Studio: Keeping Your Tattoo Wrapped Your tattoo will be covered with a protective wrap before you leave the studio. This keeps bacteria out and prevents irritation. Leave the wrap on for at least 2–4 hours (or longer if using a specialist film—your artist will advise you) before carefully removing it and cleaning your tattoo for the first time.
  • Cleaning
    • Gently wash the tattoo with warm water and unscented soap. Avoid using a cloth or towel that may irritate the skin.
    • Use your hands to gently rub the area—don’t scrub. Pat dry with a clean, soft towel.
  • Moisturising
    • Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, tattoo-friendly ointment or moisturiser.
    • Use just enough to keep the tattoo moisturised but not saturated—over-moisturising can clog pores and slow healing.
    • Reapply as necessary, especially if the tattoo feels dry or tight.
  • Protecting
    • Avoid sun exposure, as UV rays can damage the tattoo and cause fading. Once healed, use a high SPF to protect it from the sun.
    • Avoid submerging your tattoo in water (such as swimming in pools, hot tubs, or the sea) until it’s fully healed.
    • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo to avoid rubbing or irritation.

Healing Timeline

  • Days 1–3: Your tattoo may feel tender and look slightly red or swollen. This is normal. Keep it clean and moisturised.
  • Days 4–14: Your tattoo may start to peel and flake. Continue to clean and moisturise. It may look dull, but this is normal as your skin heals.
  • Days 15–30: Most of your tattoo should be healed, but the deeper layers of skin may still be healing. The tattoo should appear vibrant and smooth.

Aftercare FAQs

Can I sleep on my tattoo?
It's best to avoid sleeping directly on your tattoo during the healing process to prevent irritation, pressure, or rubbing. If you can, sleep on the opposite side or with the tattoo exposed to the air. You can also use a clean, soft towel to create a buffer between the tattoo and your sheets.
What should I do if my tattoo starts itching?
Itching is a normal part of the healing process. However, you shouldn’t scratch your tattoo as it can damage the skin and cause scarring. Instead, gently pat the area to soothe the itch or apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturiser to keep it hydrated.
Is it safe to exercise or sweat after getting a tattoo?
It's best to avoid strenuous exercise or sweating excessively during the first few weeks of healing. Sweat can irritate the tattoo and introduce bacteria, increasing the risk of infection. Once it has healed to the point where scabbing and peeling have stopped, you can gradually return to your usual routine.
Can I wear tight clothing over my tattoo while it heals?
Tight clothing can rub against your tattoo, causing irritation or even pulling on the skin. It's best to wear loose, breathable clothing during the healing process. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive that could affect the tattooed area.
When can I go back to my normal skincare routine?
It’s best to avoid using your usual skincare products on the tattooed area until it’s fully healed. This includes exfoliants, retinols, or other active ingredients. Stick to a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser or ointment until the tattoo is completely healed (usually about 3–4 weeks, but it varies).
Should I apply sunscreen over my tattoo after it heals?
Yes, after your tattoo has healed, it’s important to apply sunscreen to protect the colours and prevent fading. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (30 or above) to keep the tattoo looking vibrant.
What do I do if I think my tattoo is infected?
If you notice unusual redness, swelling, pus, or intense pain around the tattoo, it could be a sign of infection. Contact a healthcare professional, like a GP or pharmacist, for advice. Early treatment can prevent more serious complications.
